Peggy Thurston Farrell
Over the past 36 years my work has formally evolved from the two-dimensional print medium to collaged, painted and silkscreened three-dimensional paper and wood constructions. Although my medium of expression has changed, my concepts still remain tied to the idea of containment; that is, the worlds behind, underneath, and inside structures. My early silk- screen prints conveyed this concept through a series of prints that encased organic forms in jars, temples and contained spaces. This isolation made the forms more mysterious, precious and provided a metaphor for our own restricted growth. As my concepts evolved and grew, I began to work with the concept of inner and outer architectural spaces influenced by travels throughout the South and Southeastern United States, Spain and England. The architectural shapes were expressed with painted and collaged foam core relief, and the inner spaces inhabited by paper “spirits” cut from recycled prints. As the work evolved, the architectural shapes broke from their contained areas and began to climb walls creating free form relief sculptures.
Currently, I am working on a series of mixed media prints. The work employs layers of silkscreened and digital images, collage and drawing in various combinations. It is inspired by my recent travels throughout China and Thailand and addresses the contradictions between the beautiful temples and shrines of Asia and the seamy underside of life in close proximity to the pristine temples.
